From the abstract

Abstract At Abu Hureyra (AH), Syria, the 12,800-year-old Younger Dryas boundary layer (YDB) contains peak abundances in meltglass, nanodiamonds, microspherules, and charcoal. AH meltglass comprises 1.6 wt.% of bulk sediment, and crossed polarizers indicate that the meltglass is isotropic. High YDB concentrations of iridium, platinum, nickel, and cobalt suggest mixing of melted local sediment with small quantities of meteoritic material. Approximately 40% of AH glass display carbon-infused, siliceous plant imprints that laboratory experiments show formed at a minimum of 1200°–1300 °C; however, reflectance-inferred temperatures for the encapsulated carbon were lower by up to 1000 °C. Alternately, melted grains of quartz, chromferide, and magnetite in AH glass suggest exposure to minimum temperatures of 1720 °C ranging to >2200 °C. This argues against formation of AH meltglass in thatched hut fires at 1100°–1200 °C, and low values of remanent magnetism indicate the meltglass was not created by lightning. Low meltglass water content (0.02–0.05% H 2 O) is consistent with a formation process similar to that of tektites and inconsistent with volcanism and anthropogenesis. The wide range of evidence supports the hypothesis that a cosmic event occurred at Abu Hureyra ~12,800 years ago, coeval with impacts that deposited high-temperature meltglass, melted microspherules, and/or platinum at other YDB sites on four continents.

The evidence for multiple strikes around 12,800BP has been piling up for quite a few years now. There are other theories of course. Hm. When thinking about how pock marked earth is, I'm not so certain. Also space is dynamic. As I understand it, we only have a vague understanding of what happens in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuiper_belt , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hills_cloud & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oort_cloud and how the trajectories of objects therrin could be perturbed by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_planet s and the movements of our nearest solar neighbours which probably have similar 'clouds' of objects around them. And it wouldn't need to be as big as Dino-Ex, either. Imagine what would happen if something like this impacted or air-bursted with the population density and…

It worth actually to follow links to Abu Hureyra paper [1] to learn that this event is considered not as a solitary impact, but just one in a series of events across four continents. Abu Hureyra's paper also reference paper [2] with a telling name "Evidence for deposition of 10 million tonnes of impact spherules across four continents 12,800 y ago". Here's a fragment of conclusion from that paper: "The geographical extent of the (Younger Drias) YD impact is limited by the range of sites available for study to date and is presumably much larger, because we have found consistent, supporting evidence over an increasingly wide area. The nature of the impactor remains unclear,…

although we suggest that the most likely hypothesis is that of multiple airbursts/impacts by a large comet or asteroid that fragmented in solar orbit, as is common for nearly all comets. The YD impact at 12.8 ka is coincidental with major environmental events, including abrupt cooling at the YD onset, major extinction of some end-Pleistocene megafauna, disappearance of Clovis cultural traditions, widespread biomass burning, and often, the deposition of dark, carbon-rich sediments (black mat). It is reasonable to hypothesize a relationship between these events and the YDB impact, although much work remains to understand the causal mechanisms." Well, it is a collection of stories edited for morality - but where those stories originally came from is the extremely interesting point. The bible for example seems to contain two, dual, and opposing creation myths (genesis and the garden of eden) - these two stories almost certainly started out as different belief systems and were homologized. Anyways, this article links to one about another impact at the end of the Younger Dryas period (~12k years-ago) (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-60867-w) - when global sea levels rise dramatically, the mega-predators of the earth vanish, human civilization seems to appear, and we're left with (metaphorical?) stories…

about mega-floods and mega-monsters. There is a kernel of truth in all our rituals. As absurd as many of them are, they're like living history - a confused and tangled misremembering of... _something that actually happened_. And it makes one much more sympathetic to people who believed in an angry god if one understands they saw a city literally get smited from the heavens. Very interesting reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Younger_Dryas
